Day 308 – Paul

I was playing around with the camera on this day, checking that the battery was ok and not likely to conk out on me any minute as I took a really good photo, which has happened in the past.

I looked up and saw Paul so just took his photograph!  :-)

He was browsing about on his laptop and I just thought he looked nice as he sat there so … click!   ;-)

Day 276 – Boiler and Radiators!!

Aaaaah, this was a fun day!!

Very early in the morning some workmen came to take out five of our radiators and replace them with five new ones.  They were also going to fix a valve on the hot water cistern and also service the boiler.

As they would be going in and out of every room in the house to do all the things they needed to, it would have been a bit awkward settling Auntie Lucy where she would not be in the way of them or them in the way of her.

So, for the day Auntie Lucy went to my brother Alan’s house – he lives very close by so that was nice and handy for all concerned.

As this was such a day of upheaval I decided that I should take a photo of some part of it, to record the day so to speak.

So, this is a pic of our boiler when the fellas were in the middle of servicing it.  Although quite neat and tidy while working all over the house, it wasn’t until after they had gone and on into the next day when we noticed smudges of oil dotted about all over the kitchen!!

The boiler is in the kitchen and so they must have had oil on their fingers when they were servicing it and then wherever they stood or whatever the touched ended up with oil!!

Still we have some lovely radiators, the central heating works a treat and all the oil traces have gone now. :-)

Day 265 – First Delivery!

This was a new thing for us, so I felt I had to record it for Project 365!!

Since Paul’s operation he wasn’t able to drive for several weeks, so we had a bit of a problem with shopping for food and so on.  We did not want to take advantage of the kindness of family and friends who did some shopping for us, so we decided to try a home delivery from one of our local supermarkets.

So, on this day, this is a photograph to record our first home shopping delivery from a supermarket!!  :-)

As you can see, Pippin thought it was interesting and unusual too, particularly as there were boxes of doggie dinner in amongst it!!  :-)

Day 252 – Endless Phone Calls!

For several days, because both Paul and Auntie Lucy were in hospital, I was ringing both hospitals every morning to see how the patients were getting on, and sometimes later in the day or evening.

I would then phone my Mum, brother Alan, various friends of Auntie’s, and Paul’s family or they would phone me to let everyone know how they were all getting on.

So, as that was taking over things at home, I thought it best to document it somehow in a photograph and this is the result!

I did have endless notes and messages written on a pad next to the phone, but decided against showing a photo of that as I wasn’t too sure that those jottings should be viewed over the internet!  So, the phone and biro pic was my next best image to choose to illustrate what had been going on over several days, and more days after that!!

Day 235 – The Fly!!

I took this photo because I was just pottering about looking at things on my computer when this fly landed on it and strolled about on the screen!   He was happy to stay there for a while with no intention of flying off, so I grabbed the camera and took a pic of him.

Original photograph taken by me - copyright 2011/2012

It’s more a pic of the computer screen than the fly but if you look closely you will see him near the top.  By the time I took this pic he had been wandering about for quite a while on the screen!

Yes, I know, I was having a potter on my Facebook page at the time!!  (Still, the pic of me when I was much younger is an improvement to the old gal I am now)!!  ;-)

Day 186 – Still Trying With TNG!

In a previous post I mentioned that I had bought some new genealogical software to use on my family history blog So That’s Where I Get It From.  It was in php format rather than html and I was very good and read all the instructions before uploading it to my website.

Because my family history blog is not my own so to speak, because it is a free site hosted by WordPress, it seems that I cannot upload all the software stuff there.  I have another website for my business and on advice from Darrin who made the TNG software, it seems I have to upload the software there, and then do a link from my family history website to it so people can see it.  It won’t show on my business website at all, which is good as this is only for my personal family history.

Well, I came across a little problem!!  I went to my business website and set about uploading TNG to it.  I thought it would all upload in one go in the one folder, but no!!  I could only upload each individual item in each folder one at a time!!!   That wasn’t too bad in some cases as some folders only had one or two items in them.  But others had a lot of items in them, and I mean a lot!!

I was halfway through doing all this and as it was taking a lot of my time I decided that this needed to be the subject of my photograph for that particular day (as seems to be usual lately, I take my pics every day but  seem to be adding them in one go, days later  :-(  ).  So, this photo was taken because I was uploading things from one folder and had 164 separate items to upload from that folder!!  (I think there must be a better way of doing this so don’t think the problem lies with the software, more likely it lies with me as I am not greatly sure what I am doing lol).

Original photograph taken by me - copyright 2011

This is a pic of some of those 164 items in the one folder!   I still had a few more folder contents to upload and then a lot of single items that aren’t in folders.

I haven’t finished doing that yet, so still not ready to add this programme to my family history blog.

I’m a bit worried now that because I am doing it this way, when I come to get it ready for using and linking to my blog, it won’t work!!!  It seems a wonderful thing to have for those of us doing genealogy research and I’m really keen to get up and running with it, so if it goes smoothly after all this, then I will be doing the family historian’s happy dance.  :-)   :-)   :-)     If I hit some problem, which will more than likely be because I haven’t done something right, then I will be forlorn.  :-(

Fingers crossed it all goes right, in the next few days when I hope to get back to sorting it out!!

Day 175 – Oh No! It’s That Dish Again (Sigh)!!!

It seems I have done quite a few posts about this satellite dish that my man Paul wanted.  When he first mentioned it he said it wouldn’t take very long to set it up.  As it happened, the dish took many many many hours over many days with Paul, my brother Alan and my stepdaughter Claire’s man Andy doing this, that and the other with it!!!!  Not to mention the man that came to also help set it up which we had to pay for and then on his advice the dish was moved to a different place and what we paid the man for was all lost!!!

But, it’s ok!  This photo and post is to record that the dish is where it will now live on the house, and (touch wood) it seems to be working as it should be (hoooooraaaaay).  On the day this photo was taken Paul had decided that now it was settled, he would tidy up the dangling wire so it would look a little better!  :-)

Original photograph taken by me - copyright 2011

I really should stop taking photographs of this dish wherever it sits on the house, because each time I have taken these pics, I get to actually notice just how bad the paintwork is on the front of the house!!!!!

Day 174 – TNG for my Genealogy Research

On the day this photograph was taken I had bought online and downloaded some wonderful software that is ideal for my genealogy research and showing it on my genealogy blog So That’s Where I Get It From.   Sadly I have neglected my blog for a while and thought this software would be just the thing to get me back into the swing of adding things to the blog.

The new software is called The Next Generation of Genealogy Sitebuilding  by Darrin Lythgoe and is a dream for genealogists adding all their info onto their blogs.  (I will just state here that I have nothing whatsoever to do with Darrin or his website or software – I just think it looks to be a wonderful addition to my blog).

Darrin was extremely helpful to me, answering all my questions before I even bought the software.

I downloaded it and then looked at the instructions.  This pic was taken just over a week ago when I was going to add it to my genealogy blog.

Original photograph taken by me - copyright 2011

Now the thing with this software is that it is in something called php rather than the usual html for websites.  I’m not at all techie-minded so thought I really ought to have a read of the instructions so I do it right.   There was a lot of instructions!!  I made lots of notes so that I did the right thing at the right time in the right place.

Having spent a lot of time reading everything about this new software I decided that I would start afresh the next day to set it up.  But, I was unable to do this because other life things meant I didn’t get around to it at all yet!!!

So at this stage, it is not yet ready for my blog, but I am really looking forward to it as I know it would be so good.  Hopefully I will manage to get it uploaded to my blog in the next couple of days.  :-)

Day 172 – New Toy – Returned

In my Day 113 post I showed a pic of my new toy, a Toshiba Laptop computer, or to be exact a Notebook.

In the shortish time since I had it I became more and more unhappy with it.  It was very very slow, whatever I did with it.  What I really didn’t like was that although it had Windows 7 on it, it was working all the time like Vista.  I didn’t like Vista at all so there was no way that I wanted a computer that did all the Vista things like taking you to some page or other or a different thing on your computer simply because you moved your mouse!!

This new computer also had a thing where the cursor would seem to get trapped (and this could be anywhere on the screen) and no matter what I did it just would not move from wherever it appeared to be trapped and at the same time the tiniest little slider bar would appear and make the page go up and down!!   The more this happened the more it annoyed me.   Grrrrrrr!!   Eventually after quite a number of minutes the cursor would move as normal.

What really upset me was when the computer did it’s Vista-like thing and moved the cursor to a programme that was pre-loaded into the computer before I got it, only when I was wanting to search through the list of programmes I had on the computer.

It opened this particular programme up which was connected to the internet and was not something I used at all.  But as soon as the cursor went to it all by itself, my anti-virus warned me that there were 8 Trojan Viruses on the computer.  I found they were in the preloaded programmes where the cursor went to all by itself.

Well, as you can imagine I was not at all happy with this.  The name of the folder was Toshiba Games and they had pre-loaded this onto the computer for people to use to play games on the internet.  My anti-virus programme got rid of the Trojans and I deleted the folder of Toshiba Games.

Worse was to come – a day later, my anti-virus programme then informed me that it had detected over 400 threats attempting to get at my/my computer’s identity details.  I thought this must have come from the Trojan things in the folder I had deleted and so I contacted the people we purchased the computer from and told them about all this.

So, on the day this pic was taken, the new toy was being returned!!

Original photograph taken by me - copyright 2011

I’ve taken out their address and our address as I didn’t want that all over the internet.  But the parcel has gone now and goodness knows what they will do with the computer.  We are not having it back, not having another from that place and hopefully they don’t pass it on to someone else.

I had the feeling that it had been sold to someone, they had tampered with it and returned it to them and then they sent it to us as new.  This makes me wary of getting another one now.

Day 171 – The Galileo Thermometer

I was talking about the dreadful weather we seem to be having for our Summer this year in my Day 170 post and this day’s photograph is an example to show that it is so cold although we are in July.

I was given a Galileo Thermometer several years ago.  It is based on the thermometer invented by Galileo himself hundreds of years ago.  It has five balls with coloured liquid in each of them and they float in the tube that holds them.  When they go to the top it is very cold.  When they go to the bottom it is very hot.  The number of balls at the top or bottom indicates exactly how hot or cold it is.

In the several years that I have had this thermometer, during winter there are normally three or four balls at the top – four when it is really really icy and freezing and for years I never saw five balls at the top, until December 2010/January 2011.

In the summer there are usually three or four balls at the bottom.  Four balls when it is very very hot.  In all the years I have had this thermometer I have never seen five balls at the bottom.

This photograph was taken on 19th July and to prove it I stood the thermometer near my computer where it shows the date.

Original photograph taken by me - copyright 2011

As you can see there are four balls up at the top which we only ever get when the weather is icy and freezing – and this in July, the height of our Summer season!!!

I just had to take this pic to record just how our weather this Summer is not as it should be.

I love my Galileo Thermometer, it is a little different, which I like and so is very interesting to me and it is always accurate!!
