Day 280 – Nautical Corner

Just for something a little different.

We have a little corner in our bathroom that is for a few nautical bits and pieces.

Original photograph taken by me - copyright 2011/2012

These pieces of coral were something my dear Mum and Dad brought back from a holiday many many many years ago, long before people realised that it was not good to take coral away from their natural habitat.

We have always looked after these pieces and I have them now, but I have been considering for a while as to whether they should maybe sit in a tank of water?  Would they look better?  Would it keep them better protected so they don’t break up?  It would be nice to display them better I think.  We’ll have to see what we can come up with.  Any suggestions?

Day 243 – Just Beautiful!

We were out and about on our travels when I took this photograph.  I just thought it was a nice view and then when I finally added it to my computer I was surprised to see just how beautiful this scene looked, even though I say it myself.  :-)

I just love how the sun is shining on the sea, makes me want to go for a paddle!!  :-)

Day 179 – View To St. Mawes

Well, I am almost up-to-date with my little backlog of daily photos!

On the day I took this post’s photograph it was one of the very very few summery days we are having.

We were in Falmouth and I took a photograph looking straight across to St. Mawes.

The photo looks much better if you click on it to see it bigger.  And I’ve just noticed two odd things in it.  Just above where I have written “Original photograph taken by me” there looks to be a part of a building under the water!!  I did not notice this at all when I took the pic.  Also, as you look across the sea, a little above the “building” under the water, is a black shape.  It’s not a bouy and it does not look like a bird to me and again, it’s not something I noticed when I took the pic.  I wonder what it is?

Shortly after I took this pic, the view was blocked by a ship being towed by tugs from the docks out to the wide open sea.  We think the poor thing was on its way to the scrapyard!!  Still, it was a beautiful day – shame we’re not getting too many of them.

Day 148 – We’ve Been Beachcombing

We had a surprise visit from my stepdaughter Claire and her man Andy after they had been enjoying the afternoon on the beach and had also been paddling. (Beachcombing, lol).

They also walked a long way looking at various things and poor Claire ended up with very sore feet.

After their cuppa, Claire and Andy left us to go and do some more beachcombing!!  I just hope it didn’t mean too much more walking for Claire’s poor feet!!  ;-)

Day 147 – The Sailors Return

About two weeks ago on my Day 132 post, I wrote about how my man Paul was getting things ready to go out on his son David’s boat with my brother Alan but as it turned out, the weather was much too awful for that.

A week after that they planned to go out on the boat and again it was cancelled because of the terrible weather!  Anybody would think it was winter here and not summertime as it should be!!  :-)

Anyway, on the day this photograph was taken, Paul and Alan actually went out on David’s boat and this pic was taken on their return home.

Before they could even sit down, I said that I wanted to take their pic for my photo journal for Project 365 and they kindly agreed although I think they were tired after a long day.

Paul and Alan were going to go out about 9 am but this was postponed as the weather wasn’t so good.  So they eventually went out about lunchtime and had a great afternoon pottering about on David’s boat.

However, on their return they told me the RNLI (lifeboat) could not bring their boat back as it had sunk!!!!  This was their little joke and nothing untoward happened at all with the boat except that Paul ended up with elastoplast all over his legs as he appears to have cut them climbing in and out of the boat!!  Apart from that a great day was had by all and I think they are looking forward to the next trip.  :-)

Day 137 – The Minack Theatre

Yesterday we were out and about and went to have a look at The Minack Theatre.  This is an open air theatre, built many years ago, I think maybe the 1930s or thereabouts.  It sits on the side of a cliff overlooking the sea and lovely views to one side.

Although this is June, supposed to be summertime, yesterday was wet, windy, dull, cold and really like a winter’s day.

Despite the weather the performers in yesterday’s afternoon show at the Minack continued and for a while the sun decided to shine.  The Minack does not cancel any day time or evening performances unless the weather is extremely bad.  So as it is open air, those in the audience suffer the weather, whatever it is, just like the performers.

But it is a beautiful place, just lovely.

As can be seen from the photo the audience sits all up one side of the theatre, they get to sit very high indeed and there are lots of steps dotted about the side of the cliff so they can climb down to their seats if they choose to sit lower down.

I had to stay at the top as being disabled there is no way I could clamber down or back up any of the steps.  But it is possible to see all the performance and the sound is very good.  It’s a beautiful place!

Day 132 – A Day Of Sailing Or …

… not, as it turned out!

My man Paul and my brother Alan were going to go out with Paul’s sons David and Clive to see how the boat that David has been working would be in the sea (lol, and to make sure it floated)!!  ;-)

Paul gathered together all sorts of bits and pieces in readiness for the trip.  Everyone was up very early so they had a reasonably early start.  It was arranged for Alan to come to us at 9 am and then off they were all going.

Buuuuuut, listening to the weather forecast, it seemed that there was much rain, hail and thunderstorms coming so it was decided that this really wasn’t the best weather to try the boat out, especially if it didn’t float as well as it should do!!

Original photograph taken by me - copyright 2011

The little collection in this photograph was of some things Paul was gathering for the boat trip.  This was all gathered together before anyone knew what the weather forecast was.  There are his Wellie Boots, just in case he needed them.  He also decided to take a spare pair of shoes, socks, shirt, trousers etc., just in case he got wet somehow.

Paul also decided to take his BumBag so that he could put the car keys in it, and various other bits and pieces so he would not lose them over the side of the boat.  He also has a throwaway camera, thought that was best, just in case that went over the side of the boat somehow.

There is also a flask for hot drinks amongst several other things and most importantly some special tape that David had asked for that will go over the petrol tank as it had a leak!!!

So, having got everything ready and gathered together and looking forward to their adventure for the day, everyone was very disappointed that the weather was really not good enough for this trip.  Roll on another day, possibly next week!!

Day 124 – St. Mawes – Looking Lovely

Today we went over to St. Mawes to visit my Aunt.  It was an absolutely glorious, beautiful sunny day.  I think the summer is at last on its way!!

The view out the window was lovely, all the boats bobbing about on the sea.  It just looked so good I decided to take a photograph of it.

And yes, I did deliberately take the pic with the chimney pot in it because the Seagull was busy looking out at all he surveyed while I was looking out at it all as well and I thought it would be a good point of interest in the photo.  :-)

As the Seagull looked so good I decided to take a closeup pic of him, as long as he stayed there.

Even if I say so myself, I think he looks pretty good in this photo.  I think he knew I was taking his pic so stayed there for a while longer posing.    ;-)

Day 100 – Assignment: No Obvious Horizon

A fun graphic designed and made by me - copyright 2011

Wow!!!!  This is Day 100.  I’ve been taking photographs every day for 100 days.  What a milestone.  :-)   :-)   :-)

I thought that as this is a kind of special day, I ought to take a photograph completely unplanned and so decided to see what the assignment was for today at The Daily Shoot.  This is their assignment for today:  Make a photograph with no obvious horizon.

I took this to mean that it had to be an outside photograph – well, we don’t really see horizons indoors – and so the photograph below is my attempt at taking a photograph with no obvious horizons.

Original photograph taken by me - copyright 2011

This was our view at the top of a hill before coming into Penryn, on our way to Falmouth today.  It was taken from inside the car, through the windscreen as we were driving along, so it probably isn’t as clear as it should be.  As there was a couple of cars in front of us, I did not want them in the photo, so had to lift the camera a little to take the photo over the roof of each car!!  I hope the point of view in the photograph shows that there was no obvious horizon.

Day 98 – St. Mawes On A Hazy Day

We were over at St. Mawes today.  The weather started off really dreary but getting nearer St. Mawes it became very sunny with a lovely clear blue sky and no clouds anywhere.  I decided that for today’s pic I would take a photograph of some part of St. Mawes as it would look so good in the sun!!

By the time we got there the weather had completely changed.  As we drove into St. Mawes we could see a huge cruise liner moored well outside St. Mawes/Falmouth but as the sea was completely covered in mist the cruise liner was just a grey blob.

I decided to take a photograph of St. Mawes anyway, so today’s pic is showing it on what turned out to be a very hazy day.
