Day 308 – Paul

I was playing around with the camera on this day, checking that the battery was ok and not likely to conk out on me any minute as I took a really good photo, which has happened in the past.

I looked up and saw Paul so just took his photograph!  :-)

He was browsing about on his laptop and I just thought he looked nice as he sat there so … click!   ;-)

Day 186 – Still Trying With TNG!

In a previous post I mentioned that I had bought some new genealogical software to use on my family history blog So That’s Where I Get It From.  It was in php format rather than html and I was very good and read all the instructions before uploading it to my website.

Because my family history blog is not my own so to speak, because it is a free site hosted by WordPress, it seems that I cannot upload all the software stuff there.  I have another website for my business and on advice from Darrin who made the TNG software, it seems I have to upload the software there, and then do a link from my family history website to it so people can see it.  It won’t show on my business website at all, which is good as this is only for my personal family history.

Well, I came across a little problem!!  I went to my business website and set about uploading TNG to it.  I thought it would all upload in one go in the one folder, but no!!  I could only upload each individual item in each folder one at a time!!!   That wasn’t too bad in some cases as some folders only had one or two items in them.  But others had a lot of items in them, and I mean a lot!!

I was halfway through doing all this and as it was taking a lot of my time I decided that this needed to be the subject of my photograph for that particular day (as seems to be usual lately, I take my pics every day but  seem to be adding them in one go, days later  :-(  ).  So, this photo was taken because I was uploading things from one folder and had 164 separate items to upload from that folder!!  (I think there must be a better way of doing this so don’t think the problem lies with the software, more likely it lies with me as I am not greatly sure what I am doing lol).

This is a pic of some of those 164 items in the one folder!   I still had a few more folder contents to upload and then a lot of single items that aren’t in folders.

I haven’t finished doing that yet, so still not ready to add this programme to my family history blog.

I’m a bit worried now that because I am doing it this way, when I come to get it ready for using and linking to my blog, it won’t work!!!  It seems a wonderful thing to have for those of us doing genealogy research and I’m really keen to get up and running with it, so if it goes smoothly after all this, then I will be doing the family historian’s happy dance.  :-)   :-)   :-)     If I hit some problem, which will more than likely be because I haven’t done something right, then I will be forlorn.  :-(

Fingers crossed it all goes right, in the next few days when I hope to get back to sorting it out!!

Day 174 – TNG for my Genealogy Research

On the day this photograph was taken I had bought online and downloaded some wonderful software that is ideal for my genealogy research and showing it on my genealogy blog So That’s Where I Get It From.   Sadly I have neglected my blog for a while and thought this software would be just the thing to get me back into the swing of adding things to the blog.

The new software is called The Next Generation of Genealogy Sitebuilding  by Darrin Lythgoe and is a dream for genealogists adding all their info onto their blogs.  (I will just state here that I have nothing whatsoever to do with Darrin or his website or software – I just think it looks to be a wonderful addition to my blog).

Darrin was extremely helpful to me, answering all my questions before I even bought the software.

I downloaded it and then looked at the instructions.  This pic was taken just over a week ago when I was going to add it to my genealogy blog.

Now the thing with this software is that it is in something called php rather than the usual html for websites.  I’m not at all techie-minded so thought I really ought to have a read of the instructions so I do it right.   There was a lot of instructions!!  I made lots of notes so that I did the right thing at the right time in the right place.

Having spent a lot of time reading everything about this new software I decided that I would start afresh the next day to set it up.  But, I was unable to do this because other life things meant I didn’t get around to it at all yet!!!

So at this stage, it is not yet ready for my blog, but I am really looking forward to it as I know it would be so good.  Hopefully I will manage to get it uploaded to my blog in the next couple of days.  :-)

Day 114 – Busy Gal!!

Following on from the theme of my Day 113 post, I have been quite busy today sorting out some of my graphic files for my Paint Shop Pro programme on my main computer, so I have had to ignore my new laptop today!!

My PSP programme has all sorts of things in it that I can use for when I play about with graphics such as brushes, masks, filters, shapes, selections, gradients  and all sorts of things.  But where I have collected some of these things from the internet, I have them dotted about all over the place on my computer, rather than where they should be within the programme.

I set about tidying it all up today and then because there was so much, I decided that I had better back it all up on my external hard drive.  It was then as this was going on that I saw I have 689 filters!!  There were nearly 400 masks!!  Not to mention the hundreds of other files for the other bits and pieces I use for the programme.  This rather surprised me, I had no idea I had so much stuff!!

As I have been busy with that today I took a photograph to show what I had been doing today.

Ha ha!  Now that is tidy!!  :-)    Now I know where I can find things for when I want to use them in my PSP prog!!

Because I was so amazed at how many files there were and even though I backed it all up on my external hard drive, I decided that I would copy it all to my Dropbox out there in cyberspace.  That was this afternoon and now I am writing this after 10.00pm and my Dropbox is still copying the files from my computer!!  It has been moving over 3500 files or so and at this moment still has 367 more to move and tells me it will take 4 hours!!

I think I will have a break from the computer tomorrow and catch up with some genealogy.  ;-)     Aaaaah, but I’ve got my new laptop to play with too.  Decisions, decisions, decisions!!

Day 113 – New Toy!!

Yesterday I was playing with my new toy, which is why I did not get a chance to add yesterday’s photo until today!!

My new toy is a laptop computer or what they call a notebook.  I was exploring it and adding a couple of programmes and although I took some photos of it for this Photo Journal for yesterday, the time just got away from  me so I’ve torn myself away from it now to add yesterday’s and today’s photos.  :-)

I’m a little disappointed in how this photo turned out!  I took several pics of the new laptop but they all came out quite dark!  Some were taken with the flash and some without but none of the photos look that good to me.  Not sure why that should have happened!!

Anyway, this is it!  Once I get used to it and know where everything is I’m sure I will be enjoying using it properly in no time.

Day 78 – My Blogiversary!!

Today is the first blogiversary for my genealogy blog So That’s Where I Get It From.  I’m very excited to have this special day and quite amazed at how much I have written over the past year about my ancestors!!

Of course, in view of it being a special day today, I just had to take a photograph of my blog.  ;-)

Original photograph taken by me today 17 April 2011 - copyright 2011

The quality of the photo is not great, as it is really a pic of my computer screen showing my blog.

I was a bit silly, because I was going to take the photograph when I had done an “It’s my blogiversary” post, but when I did that, I went on and added a couple more posts and so the “blogiversary” post has moved down the screen and if I took a pic of that where it now is, my blog title wouldn’t show.  But it’s still a pic taken today on my actual blogiversary.  Yaaaaay!  lol.  ;-)

Day 27: Technology – 12 years back!!

I was preparing some photos from many years ago for an assignment I was doing today for my genealogy blog So That’s Where I Get It From.  The assignment was asking what technology there was when I was a child, how I use it these days and was there anything I didn’t like etc..

Being very non-techie minded I was thinking how difficult this was for me to answer it as well as write about it.  For several days I’ve been trying to think of techie stuff from way back.

Anyway, I  did a draft post for my other blog and needed to take a pic of a computer (my first one) that is twelve years old, to compare with computers these days.  So, as I took that pic, I thought that it would also be good for today’s pic here on my photo journal for the Project as it shows something of what was planned for me today – which was preparing for the assignment!

Original photograph taken by me today 25 February 2011 - copyright 2011

It’s amazing just how much things have changed in not so many years.  This computer has space for a floppy disc, and cassettes.  The moniter goes back about two feet!  It’s a small screen and the computer has all of 1gb space!!  How did I ever manage with so little space?

The genealogist in me thinks that in a couple of hundred years time anyone looking at this pic will be saying “WOW didn’t they have funny computers back  then”.  :-)
