Day 346 – Eye Catching Clouds!

This was taken while we were out and about on our travels again.  I just thought these clouds were extremely eye-catching and really hoped that the photo I took of them would show just how amazing they were.

The clouds were so very dark, almost black and then the part that had the sun shining on them made them look like they were on fire!  It just looked so different and actually very beautiful!  I don’t think the camera has caught it as well as I would have liked, but you must admit, these clouds are certainly eye-catching!  (Well, they caught my eye).  :-)

Day 324 – View From A Window

On this particular day the sun had been shining and apart from being cold and windy was a very nice day.

Now we had our new window we could look out and see things without trying to look at the garden through constant condensation on the window.

So, as I was looking through the window on this sunny day I thought how good this looked so took a photo!

The sky looked such a beautiful blue and together with the white fluffy cloud and green treetops that I could see out of the top of the new window, I felt it was too nice to miss.

I got an added bonus with a seagull flying into view just as I took the photograph and now we appreciate our new window so much because we can actually see out of it properly!  :-)

Day 270 – Fluffy Clouds

I took this photograph while we were out and about on our travels, just because I thought the clouds looked all fluffy and comfy!!

Original photograph taken by me - copyright 2011/2012

They look like you could just snuggle up in them and have a wonderful view!!

Years ago I would have been able to tell you what sort of clouds they are such as nimbus etc., except that these days I have forgotten which type is which so that would explain I suppose why I have titled this photograph as “Fluffy Clouds” !!! :-)

Day 209 – Summer???

For those of you who follow my posts, you will know that I have been a little preoccupied in this Photo Journal with the way our Summer weather is going.  We don’t seem to be having a good summer at all with dismal, dreary, wet, cold, wild and windy days more than sunny days.  We’ve had three or four really hot days but that’s about it for decent days.

Yesterday we were out and about on our travels and I took this photograph because it sort of sums up the weather we have had for this summer.  (I’m thinking that when I’ve finished this Project 365 I will start another with just a daily pic of whatever the weather is on each day – that might be quite interesting)!!

The clouds were actually much darker than they look in this photo, which is why I took this pic because although we get dark clouds on wet gloomy days, they never have seemed to be as dark as these were yesterday!!

Here is another pic I took of these dark clouds once we had parked the car.

Original photograph taken by me - copyright 2011

It wasn’t only me that was thinking the clouds were more unusual than normal because of how dark they were.  As I sat in the car in the car park I noticed many people walking along and then turning to look up at the clouds, and several even pointing up at them to show their companions.

I’ve not really seen people do this on a normal dreary day so there was definitely something about these very very very dark clouds.

In the early hours of yesterday morning we had a bad thunderstorm, with lots of thunderclaps and lightning, so much so that poor Pippin was petrified when we were in bed.  And poor Demelza Duck, was in a frantic state when I let her out of her house yesterday morning.  She must have been very frightened in the early hours with all this going on  (which I had been worrying about) and because she is almost completely blind she has a path she uses to get from her house to the grass and her pond but yesterday morning the poor thing was so frazzled she crashed into the side of our house, crashed into the steps to the back door, fell into her bowl of water that is near the back door, and then crashed into a plant container on her way to her pond.  She was quacking in a frenzied way and was in a terrible state.  I tried to soothe her and tell her it was alright but she just went off up the garden.  Later though before we went out, she had calmed down and was back to normal having some bread and lots of cuddles.

My brother Alan lives near us (it only takes a few minutes to get to each others’ homes in the car) and a house almost opposite his was struck by the lightning in the early hours which started a fire which has seriously damaged their house.

So the clouds during the day yesterday must be what was left of the bad thunderstorm – hopefully we won’t get many more like that for a while.

Day 80 – Clouds

As we were driving along while out and about today, I noticed cloud formations that were in lines, long lines and thought how unusual this was.  I mentioned it to my man Paul but as he was driving he could not really see what I was talking about.

But, you can see that I have him well trained regarding my taking photos for this Project 365, because he told me there was a layby coming up and if he parked the car there, then I could take some photos of this unusual cloud formation!!  ;-)

This is the first of the photos I took.  I tried to get the view as far as the cloud “lines” went in the sky.

Original photograph taken by me today 19 April 2011 - copyright 2011

Paul said that maybe the lines were vapour trails from planes, but as the view as we drove along had a great expanse of sky to look at, there had not been any planes flying about anywhere in the sky during our car journey.  I had noticed these lines a fair way back at the start of our journey, so they had not changed, nor moved during our half an hour or more drive.

I tried to get part of the lines closer up.

In the above photo there appears to be three “lines” of cloud and I think the one in the middle has a very interesting almost regular pattern to it.

Here’s another photograph I took of the sky with these lines.

Original photograph taken by me today 19 April 2011 - copyright 2011

This photo shows the lines at the other end and here you can see there are four lines of cloud formation.

Original photograph taken by me today 19 April 2011 - copyright 2011

I found these lines quite fascinating, which is probably why I took so many photos of them!  :-)    But the interesting thing for me is that two to three hours earlier, when I was letting our doggie Pippin into our garden at home, I also saw a cloud formation of lines in the sky then!!  It’s almost as if this is the same clouds I saw but they haven’t changed or moved.

We have lived in this area for many years and do see planes flying about and we see also when they leave their vapour trails.  Those trails usually disappear fairly quickly, but they are also usually much thinner than the lines I saw in the sky today.  Again for those above our garden this morning, there were no planes flying about.  Even if we did not see any, we can hear them, but there was no plane sound today.

Last pic, another attempt at trying to get the complete length of them in the photo, so more of a distance shot this time.

What I did not notice before I looked at these pics, because I was too busy looking at the lines of cloud going across the sky, was that there is also a line of cloud going the other way!!

It’s normal to see all sorts of different cloud formations but these lines seemed so completely different to me.  The fact that they stayed there, and did not change, even just a little, or move just seems odd to me.  I would be interested to know what others think of this.  :-)

Day 55: View From A Window

I am posting this photograph a day late although it was taken yesterday.  The reason I did not get a chance to post it yesterday will be given in the next post (Day 56)!!  :-)

Yesterday we were visiting my 100 year old Aunt and although it was a lovely sunny day, that changed to very little sun but very bright sky.  Everything outside looked very hazy.

I decided to take a photograph of the view from one of my Aunt’s windows, even though it was looking quite hazy.

This is a lovely view to look at, whatever the weather.  My Aunt Lucy is an artist and often makes sketches from photos she takes of the sea at different times, sometimes calm, sometimes rippling, sometimes choppy, sometimes just wild and she also notes how the sky changes, and all the different types of cloud formations, as well as all the different activity on the water with the boats, dinghys, foot ferry, paddlers, swimmers and so on.  So it is a fascinating view from a window!!

And sometimes you see this, which I think is just very cute!!  :-)

It’s a wonderful window to view sealife, whatever the season.

Day 49: SuperMoon

I’ve been hearing all week about the SuperMoon that was happening today, so I just knew it had to be my pic of the day whatever else caught my eye!

The SuperMoon is so called because today it will be it’s closest to Earth this evening for about nineteen or so years but what makes it Super is the fact that it will also be a Full Moon tonight too.  This makes it seem much closer and much more brighter than normal.

Today’s daily newspaper informed us that the best time to see this would be about 6.10pm  so I went and had a look at that time, but it was still very light and no sign of the moon at all.

I went out about half an hour later and still no moon!  When I next looked to see the SuperMoon about three quarters of an hour later, this is what I saw.

Original photograph taken by me today 19 March 2011 - copyright 2011

For several hours before this clouds had started to block out the sky.  It had been a beautiful sunny day with blue blue sky and no clouds.  I wasn’t surprised to see the clouds because every time there is something to see in the sky like a meteor shower, an eclipse, or anything else it always seems to be a blanket of clouds and we never get to see the phenomenon!

So, in my photograph of the SuperMoon it does not appear to be anything other than the norm!  It certainly did not look as if it was closer to us and certainly did not look any brighter.  The clouds gave it a hazy effect so I must say I was a bit disappointed in this.

I took another pic and zoomed in as close as I could get.

Original photograph taken by me today 19 March 2011 - copyright 2011

It seems to me that when the Moon is normal and not in any way Super, it is possible to see so much more just by looking at it, than I saw in these photographs when it is supposed to be a wonderful sight.  Or it could be me not taking good enough pics!

I popped out later to see if I could get better photographs but the Moon was all but completely hidden by the much more dense clouds!  I bet the Moon will look super tomorrow when I won’t be taking a pic of it.  ;-)

Day 36: The Sun Trying To Get His Hat On!!

Well today was a bit miserable, a bit bright, a bit dreary and then brighter and so on.  Towards the end of the afternoon I noticed sunlight showing through a small gap in the thick clouds and almost next to it was the outline of the sun through the clouds.  It made me think the sun was trying hard to come out to shine!

The sun has got his hat on,

Hip hip hip hooray,

The sun has got his hat on,

And he’s coming out today!

Lol, that’s the only words I know of that song about the sun and I have no idea what it’s proper title is or who sang it!  :-)   But seeing the sun trying to get out through the clouds made me think of it.

Actually, I’m thinking that this is a very good pic of a bad photograph!  It was taken through glass and I could not get a clear shot at it, so it really doesn’t look quite so good in the photo.

Original photograph taken by me today 6 March 2011 - copyright 2011

Probably because I haven’t been looking before now, but I don’t remember seeing the sun looking like this behind clouds.  I just thought it was a great effect and wish I could have taken a better photo!!  ;-)
